Secularism: The Root of Modern World Problems

Amidst the glitter of technological advancement and rapid modernization, we are often confronted with a heartbreaking irony. This modern world that we take pride in actually harbors so much bitterness: rampant injustice, endless moral crises, and spiritual emptiness that suffocates the soul. Have we ever paused to reflect and ask: what is the root of all this chaos? Why does material progress not correlate with inner peace and social justice?

The answer converges on one fundamental idea that has poisoned the lifeblood of modern civilization: Secularism. This idea is not merely a lifestyle, but an ideology that systematically separates religion from life. This article will invite us to delve into the historical roots of secularism, expose its logical flaws based on Mafahim Hizbut Tahrir, and rediscover the warm embrace of comprehensive Islam.

1. Introduction: Delving into the Roots of the Modern World Crisis

Dear readers, may Allah’s mercy be upon you. When we look at the world today, it is as if we are witnessing a magnificent grand ship that has lost its compass. Scientific and technological progress has enabled humans to fly into outer space and dive to the ocean floor, yet at the same time, humans have lost direction in finding meaning in their own lives.

Secularism arrives like a thick fog that obscures humanity’s view from divine light. It whispers a sweet lie that humans can live happily with rules they create themselves, without the intervention of the Creator. As a result, we see Allah’s laws cast aside, replaced by man-made laws laden with interests, biases, and desires.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has warned us about the danger of taking some religious teachings while discarding others:

“Then do you believe in a part of the Scripture and disbelieve in another? So what is the recompense for those who do that among you except disgrace in worldly life, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest of punishment. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.” (QS. Al-Baqarah: 85)

This verse beautifully and clearly describes the essence of secularism: separating religion, taking what suits one’s tastes, and discarding what governs public life. The impact is clear: disgrace in this world and punishment in the hereafter. Let us dissect more deeply what secularism actually is and how it works to destroy the foundations of our lives.

2. The Meaning of Secularism: Separating Religion from Life

In Islamic tsaqofah, particularly as explained in the book Mafahim Hizbut Tahrir by Sheikh Taqiuddin an-Nabhani, secularism is defined with one very precise and comprehensive sentence.

“Al-‘Almaniyyah (secularism) is the separation of religion from life and the state.”

The phrase fashl ad-din ‘an al-hayah (separation of religion from life) is the core of the Capitalist mabda (ideology). Secularism does not always mean atheism that absolutely rejects the existence of God. Many secularists still diligently worship in their places of worship. However, their fatal error lies in limiting God’s authority. They believe God only has the right to regulate private matters such as prayer, fasting, and supplication, but God must not interfere in politics, economics, education, and state law.

To understand how secularism permeates various aspects of life, let us examine the following table:

Aspect of LifeComprehensive Islamic ViewSecularist View
Politics & StateThe state must implement Islamic Sharia (Khilafah)The state must be neutral from religion; laws are made by parliament
EconomyProhibition of usury, monopoly, gambling; obligatory zakatFree capitalism, legalized usury, maximizing profit
EducationForming islamiyyah shakhsiyyah (Islamic personality)Material-oriented, religion is merely supplementary or eliminated
Social & CultureBound by Sharia law (covering aurah, prohibition of ikhtilath)Freedom of expression, moral standards determined by consensus
Law & CriminalHudud, Jinayat, Ta’zir from Allah (providing deterrent effect)Man-made positive law that can be changed at any time

This understanding affirms that secularism is a middle-path aqidah (creed) born not from revelation, but from the compromise of limited human intellect.

3. Historical Traces: Europe’s Trauma Forced Upon the Entire World

Why did secularism emerge? Was it born from a pure intellectual study? Not at all. Secularism was born from the dark womb of European history, full of blood, oppression, and deep trauma toward their religious institution at that time (the Church in the Middle Ages).

During the period often called the Dark Ages in Europe, religious leaders held absolute power. They claimed to be God’s representatives on earth. Anyone who opposed the Church’s views, including scientists, would be accused of apostasy and sentenced to death. The case of Galileo Galilei being punished for stating that the earth revolves around the sun is one real example of oppression in the name of religion.

Furthermore, there was economic exploitation in the form of selling indulgences (indulgencies), as well as bloody civil wars between religious sects that claimed millions of lives, such as the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648).

This suffocating condition triggered resistance from thinkers, philosophers, and the European people. They faced a great dilemma: discard religion entirely (atheism) or remain religious but strip religion of its power over state affairs. Ultimately, they chose a compromise path:

فَصْلُ الدِّينِ عَنِ الْحَيَاةِ

“Separating religion from life.”

This compromise path then became the Aqidah of Secularism. The biggest problem is that this European historical trauma was forced as a universal standard of truth. Meanwhile, the Islamic world never experienced such trauma!

In Islamic history, religion and science walked hand in hand. Scholars were also great scientists. The Khilafah state actually facilitated the development of science without ever oppressing scientists. Forcing secularism as a solution upon Muslims is like giving chemotherapy to a healthy person just because their neighbor had cancer. This action is not only misdirected, but highly destructive!

4. The Broken Bridge Analogy: Understanding the Logical Flaw of Secularism

To help us understand how irrational the secularist ideology is, let us reflect on a simple yet profound visual analogy: The Broken Bridge Analogy.

Imagine life as a journey crossing a very deep gorge. On the other side of the gorge lies our ultimate destination, namely the hereafter (the abode of eternity). To get there safely, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has built a strong, sturdy, and perfect bridge. That bridge is Islamic Sharia.

“And, [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way. This has He instructed you that you may become righteous.” (QS. Al-An’am: 153)

In the comprehensive Islamic view, this bridge is intact, connecting the world and the hereafter. Every step we take in this world (politics, economics, social) is a footing on the bridge that will lead us to the hereafter.

However, what does secularism do? Secularism comes and saws this bridge right in the middle. They separate the worldly cliff from the hereafter cliff. They say, “On this worldly cliff, we use our own rules. Later for the hereafter, only then do we use God’s rules.”

The consequences are terrifying:

  1. The bridge becomes disconnected and lacks a clear foundation.
  2. Humans who try to walk on worldly rules (secularism) will lose direction, drift aimlessly, and eventually fall into the abyss of destruction (moral crisis, injustice, exploitation).
  3. They dream of reaching the hereafter safely, even though the bridge they traverse has been destroyed by their own hands.

This analogy shows that separating religion from life is an act of civilizational suicide. How can we expect salvation from the Creator while we reject His guidance in navigating life?

5. Philosophical Failure: When Humans Challenge the Creator’s Role

The book Mafahim Hizbut Tahrir exposes the fundamental weakness of secularist ideology. Philosophically, secularism contains a very fatal internal contradiction. Let us dissect this philosophical failure with a clear heart.

Secularism acknowledges the existence of God (the Creator), yet rejects God’s right to regulate His creation (the Regulator). This is an extraordinarily flawed logical paradox. If we acknowledge that Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise, and All-Perfect, how can our limited intellects feel smarter in making life rules?

“Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Acquainted?” (QS. Al-Mulk: 14)

The following table compares the characteristics of Allah’s Law (Sharia) with Man-Made Law (Secularism):

CharacteristicMan-Made Law (Secularism)Allah’s Law (Islamic Sharia)
SourceLimited human intellect influenced by desiresRevelation from the One Who knows everything
NatureChangeable (trial and error), legal today, illegal tomorrowFixed and eternal, relevant throughout the ages
JusticeRelative, often favoring the powerful/wealthyAbsolute justice, equally applicable to citizens and rulers
Moral StandardMoral relativism (depending on majority consensus)Fixed moral standard (Halal and Haram)
PurposeWorldly material benefits aloneRahmatan lil ‘alamin and worldly-hereafter happiness

This philosophical failure produces systematic damage. When humans take over the role of Al-Hakim (the Lawmaker), they will always be trapped in personal and factional interests. Look at how laws in the secular-democratic system are often bought by oligarchs (capital owners). Truth is no longer determined by revelation, but by the majority vote, even if that majority agrees on immorality. This is intellectual arrogance that destroys human dignity itself.

6. The Illusion of Neutrality: Why the Secular State Is Never Truly Neutral

Advocates of secularism often lull society with a sweet promise: “The secular state is a neutral state. It stands above all factions and does not favor any religion, so everyone can live peacefully.”

Is this true? Let us use our intellectual honesty. The neutrality of the secular state is a grand illusion.

In reality, no state is devoid of values. Every state must adopt certain value standards to regulate its society. When a secular state rejects using Islamic rules (Sharia), it does not become “neutral”; rather, it is imposing secular-liberal values upon all its citizens, including Muslims!

Let us examine evidence of the secular state’s non-neutrality in the following table:

Issue/CaseSecular “Neutrality” ClaimReality of Value Imposition (Anti-Religion)
Dress CodeThe state does not regulate religious mattersIn France, Muslim schoolgirls are banned from wearing hijab in schools in the name of “Laïcité” (secularism).
Economic SystemThe state frees the marketThe state mandates the usury system (conventional banking) and marginalizes pure Sharia economics.
Morality & FamilyThe state respects individual rightsLegalization of LGBT and adultery in the name of human rights, while preaching that opposes it is criminalized.
EducationObjective educationCurriculum forces Darwinian evolution theory without criticism and distances students from Islamic aqidah.

It is clear that secularism is not a neutral referee on the sidelines. Secularism is an aggressive player that seeks to push Islam out of the arena of life. They tolerate Islam only if Islam is confined to mosques and prayer mats. However, as soon as Muslims demand that the economy be regulated without usury, or that the state be led by the Khilafah system, the “tolerant” face of secularism instantly transforms into fierce and oppressive fangs.

“And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion (mabda/ideology). Say, ‘Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance.’” (QS. Al-Baqarah: 120)

7. The Destructive Impact of Secularism on the Muslim Ummah

The separation of religion from life is not an empty theory without consequences. It is like a deadly virus that has paralyzed the body of the Muslim Ummah for more than a century. Since the fall of the Ottoman Khilafah in 1924, secularism has been forced upon the lands of Muslims through physical and intellectual colonization (ghazwul fikri).

What are its destructive impacts? Let us detail them with deep concern:

1. The Uprooting of Sharia from Public Life The magnificent laws of Allah, such as Islamic criminal law (uqubat), the Islamic economic system (nizham al-iqtishadi), and the Islamic system of governance (nizham al-hukm), have been cast aside and replaced with colonial legacy laws. Muslims are forced to live under a capitalist system that sucks the blood of the people through taxes and usurious debt.

2. The Division of the Ummah through Nationalist Barriers Secularism gave birth to its offspring called Nationalism. Muslims who were once one body under the shelter of the Khilafah are now divided into more than 50 nation-states. As a result, when our brothers in Palestine, Syria, or Uyghur are massacred, other Muslim countries can only condemn or remain silent because of artificial territorial boundaries.

“The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.” (QS. Al-Hujurat: 10)

3. Identity Crisis and Intellectual Colonization Many Muslim youth experience an inferiority complex. They feel ashamed of Islamic teachings considered “outdated” and instead proudly imitate the permissive Western lifestyle. Liberal figures disguised as scholars emerge, interpreting religion according to the secular intellect’s orders.

4. Severe Moral Decay Because religion is removed from the standard of good and evil, immorality runs rampant. Adultery is facilitated, alcohol is legalized, and corruption becomes a culture. This is the logical consequence when humans abandon Allah’s supervision and only fear man-made laws that are easily manipulated.

8. The Contradiction of Secularism with Islamic Aqidah

My brothers, we must realize that secularism is not merely a matter of mismanaging state affairs. Accepting secularism means risking the purity of our aqidah. Why? Because Islam is a syamil (comprehensive) and kamil (perfect) religion.

The book Nizhamul Hukm fil Islam explicitly outlines that sovereignty in Islam belongs to Sharia (As-Siyadatu lisy-Syara’). This means that the right to determine halal-haram, right-wrong, and praiseworthy-blameworthy belongs only to Allah SWT through His revelation, not human intellect.

“Legislation is not but for Allah. He has commanded that you worship none except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.” (QS. Yusuf: 40)

Secularism transfers God’s sovereignty into human hands (parliament). This is a form of usurping divine right (rububiyyah). When a Muslim agrees that economic, social, or criminal law need not refer to the Qur’an and Sunnah, unconsciously he has doubted the perfection of Islamic teachings.

”…This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion…” (QS. Al-Ma’idah: 3)

This verse is a devastating blow to secularism. If Allah declares Islam is already perfect, governing everything from entering the bathroom to managing the state (الخلافة), then claiming Islam has no concept of politics or economics is a great lie against Allah’s word.

9. Answering Doubts: Refuting the Arguments of Secularism’s Defenders

Defenders of secularism often throw syubhat (confused thinking) to divert the Ummah from Sharia. Let us refute these doubts with qath’i and logical evidence.

Doubt 1: “Religion and state must be separated to avoid bloody conflicts like in Europe.” Refutation: This is a flawed analogy (qiyas ma’al fariq). European history is indeed dark because their religion (at that time) contradicted reason and science. But Islamic history is the opposite! When the Islamic Khilafah was implemented for 13 centuries, all of humanity (Muslims, Christians, Jews) lived together peacefully. Science flourished in Baghdad and Cordoba. The world’s greatest conflicts (World War I and II) were actually triggered by secular states greedy for capitalist colonization, not because of the implementation of Islamic Sharia!

Doubt 2: “Islamic Sharia is outdated, irrelevant to the dynamic modern era.” Refutation: Islamic Sharia comes from the Creator of humans who knows the past, present, and future. The fundamental rules of humans (the need for food, the instinct for religion, the instinct to preserve offspring) have never changed since the time of Prophet Adam until the Day of Judgment. Sharia regulates fundamental principles, while technical forms (such as technology) are left to human innovation (madaniyyah). It is actually secular law that is outdated, because it is constantly revised due to its inability to predict social impacts.

Doubt 3: “Indonesia is diverse; if we apply Islamic Sharia, non-Muslims will be oppressed.” Refutation: This is baseless fear (Islamophobia). In the Khilafah system, non-Muslim citizens (Ahludz Dzimmah) receive full protection of their blood, property, and honor. They are allowed to worship, eat, drink, and marry according to their religion. History records how just Islamic courts were toward non-Muslims, such as the story of a Jewish man who won against Caliph Ali bin Abi Talib in court because the Caliph did not have sufficient evidence. Islamic justice is a mercy to all worlds.

“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.” (QS. Al-Anbiya: 107)

10. Conclusion: Returning to Comprehensive Islam as the True Solution

Dear readers who long for the revival of Islam, our journey dissecting secularism leads us to one clear conclusion: Secularism is the root of modern world problems, and it is a poison that corrupts the aqidah and life of the Ummah.

As long as we still use secular glasses to view political, economic, and social problems, we will continue to spin in crisis. The cure for the disease of secularism is not to reform secularism itself, but to discard it entirely and return to the embrace of comprehensive Islam.

“O you who have believed, enter into Islam completely [and perfectly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.” (QS. Al-Baqarah: 208)

Comprehensive Islam can only be fully realized within the framework of the political institution inherited from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, namely the Khilafah Rasyidah ‘ala Minhajin Nubuwwah. The Khilafah is the institution that will reunite the broken bridge between worldly and hereafter affairs. The Khilafah will implement Islamic Sharia completely domestically, and carry the Islamic da’wah to all corners of the world through da’wah and jihad, to liberate humanity from servitude to fellow humans (secularism) toward servitude only to Allah, Lord of all worlds.

Let us unite our ranks, strengthen our resolve, and struggle together with the sincere ranks of ideological da’wah, to uproot the roots of secularism and replant the tree of Islamic revival that will shelter the world with His justice and mercy. Allahu Akbar!
